Had a Jehovah’s Witness visit me while working the other morning. He reminded me of a Mormon because of how nice he was dressed. And lots of teeth when he smiled.
I let him start his presentation and stopped him when he talked about the possibliity of having a “better life”. I asked what this was about. He then went to the “live on earth forever in paradise stuff”. This seems to be the punch line when talking to JW’s. When I asked how this was possible, he then talked about being a good follower of the bible to be able to be one of the ones living on the earth when all of this comes about. I then asked him why “being a good follower” would make him any different from those who are good followers of Islam, Mormonism or Bhuddism. He then said that they follow the bible, and not the koran or the Mormon literature.
Well, I listened to what he had to say. Now it was my turn. I explained how in the bible, Jesus said that no one was good other than God. That only the “righteous” will be saved. And the only righteousness that is of any good is the righteousness of Jesus. That even all of our righteous works are “dirty rags” before the Lord. That salvation is a gift from God, through faith, and NOT WORKS. When he then talked about following all the stuff in the bible, I explained that God’s law is written on our hearts and even if we sin once, we are guilty of all. It would be a good thing to know the bible, but knowing your heart is good enough, and it is desperately wicked. And if you are not seen as perfect in God’s eyes on judgement day(through the righteousness of Christ in being born again) that you will be guilty. He then asked how this is done…and I explained the concept of repentence and faith. And how Jesus commands all to repent because He has set a day when He will judge the world in RIGHTEOUSNESS.
At this, my new JW friend picked up his magazines and left without saying anything. Very sad. But the truth was proclaimed and God can and will work through His Word being proclaimed. May He be gorified.
